PRESS RELEASE | Shadow of the Master. Exposing the other side of artists.
A historical art project by Julius Rooymans.
Masters from the 17th century, among others, by people from the 21st century
The works of the world famous Dutch Masters Rembrandt, Johannes Vermeer, Jan Steen, Vincent van Gogh and Mondrian come together in a fascinating way in this grand project by artist Julius Rooymans, known for the production 'Nachtwacht360'. The large photographic works have been made possible by the special collaboration with the AFAS theatre.
Thanks to the cooperation of renowned institutes such as Museum Vrolik, The Rembrandt House, Allard Pierson and well-known collectors and antique dealers, numerous historical and original objects such as crockery, weapons and decors can be seen in the photographic works.
Aided by the expertise and unbridled dedication of professionals such as master make-up artist Arjen van der Grijn, costume designer Catherine Cuykens and art historian Marieke de Winkel, jewellery, hairpieces and clothing have been made historically correct down to the smallest details.
Technique and extras from the 21st century bring the works of art from the 17th and 19th centuries to life.
Julius Rooymans grew up in a family of artists and studied photography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. He has been shooting for nearly 25 years and has done covers for Newsweek and The New York Times. Julius is fascinated by history, is a storyteller and thinks big .
Everything comes together in his art project 'Shadow of the Master': his historical knowledge, wanting to tell large, layered stories and making large works.
Shadow of the Master can be seen from March 7, 2022 in the brand new AFAS Theater in Leusden. The exhibition has limited access. Once a month, AFAS and Julius organize special meetings to explain the work and show the short documentary.
In addition to the opening in the AFAS theater, the works can also be seen in the Wanrooij Gallery in Amsterdam. The gallery presents fromMarch 10 to May 14, 2022 a solo exhibition by Julius Rooymans with The Shadow of the Master and the Nachtwacht360; a series of monumental photographic works and portraits. Paintings by Rembrandt, Vermeer and Jan Steen come to life. The layered images, full of scenes and symbolism, reflect the Golden Age in extra large format
